“Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him”
The Holy Spirit promised Simeon that he would not die until he had seen Jesus the Christ. With hopeful expectation, he waited for the fulfillment of this blessed promise. For Simeon, Jesus’ arrival was everything to him; without it, he would not rest. And
one day the Lord did come. Led by the Spirit to the temple, Simeon encountered baby Jesus. There in his own arms, his eyes beheld the Promise of salvation, the Light to all people, the Lord appointed to radically change the world. The very presence of Jesus replaced Simeon’s restlessness with a flood of peace and fulfillment.
Simeon is just a small piece in the story of Jesus’ birth; few know about him. But God uses this man to paint for us a beautiful picture of the coming of Salvation. Once a weary soul encounters Jesus, bones that were once wasting away become renewed. A life once held in a limbo of agitation finds eternal peace. The eyes of our soul open and then we know that the search s over. In Jesus, the things of old have passed away, and the new has come. In Jesus, we have everything.
